Credit and debt: scores, cards, loans and BNPL

Read your credit report, compare cards, loans and BNPL on their real cost, and build a repayment plan that clears your debt.

Debt rarely arrives as one big decision. It builds from a card balance carried for a month, an instalment plan at checkout, a car loan quoted at a rate that looked low. Each choice seems fine on its own, and the total only shows up later in your credit report and your monthly bills. This course shows you how lenders judge you, what each kind of borrowing really costs once you compare on EIR, and how to get out of debt with a plan you can stick to. If things have gone too far, you learn where to get help in Singapore before it gets worse.

What you'll be able to do

Syllabus

Module 1: Read your credit report the way a lender does

What Credit Bureau Singapore records about you, how the risk grade summarises it, and how to get and check your own report, so nothing in it surprises you at your next application.

Module 2: Use a credit card without paying interest

How the interest-free period works, why the minimum payment keeps you borrowing, and which card charges cost the most, so you can use a card for convenience without carrying a balance.

Module 3: Choose the cheapest way to borrow a lump sum

Compare personal instalment loans, credit lines and balance transfers on EIR and total cost, so you pick the right product for the amount and the time you need it.

Module 4: Use buy now pay later without losing track

How BNPL providers make money, what the Singapore industry code of conduct asks of them, and how to keep several plans from adding up to a problem.

Module 5: Handle car and renovation loans on your terms

Why car and renovation loans follow their own rules, what MAS limits apply to car financing, and how to work out the total cost before signing.

Module 6: Pay off debt faster with a plan you will keep

List every debt, then choose between the avalanche and snowball methods using a worked example, so extra money goes where it does the most good.

Module 7: Get help early when debt is too big to budget away

Recognise when debt has moved past a budgeting fix, and know what debt consolidation plans and Credit Counselling Singapore offer, so you call the right place before things get worse.

Module 8: Tell a licensed moneylender from a loan shark

Check whether a lender is licensed, recognise how illegal lenders find you, and know what to do if one contacts you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the course take?

About seven hours across eight modules, including the exercises. Most people finish in three to four weeks at two or three hours a week.

Will checking my own credit report hurt my risk grade?

Lesson 1.4 walks you through getting your own report. How your own requests are recorded is explained on the Credit Bureau Singapore website, so read it there before you request.

Does this course cover home loans?

No. Home loans have their own rules on borrowing limits, CPF use and loan structure, which are taught in Property & Mortgages.

Is this financial advice?

No. The course is education. It teaches how to compare credit products and plan repayments, and never tells you which product to take. For advice on your own situation, speak to a licensed adviser or Credit Counselling Singapore.
